Cross Disciplinary Approach
In the NextGen program, the cross-disciplinary approach unfolds gradually as schools progress through structured stages of implementation. Once partner schools have successfully mastered the linear, subject-specific approach and are fully aligned with progressive methodologies, they are ready to move to the second stage. At this stage, the NextGen program introduces a thematic approach to learning, where lessons are organized around themes that connect two or three subjects. These themes create an integrated learning experience, helping students understand the interconnectedness of knowledge across various disciplines.
By adopting thematic lessons, schools are able to provide students with a deeper, more holistic understanding of concepts. This method encourages learners to explore the relationships between different subjects, enabling them to see how science, mathematics, language arts, or social studies are interwoven. These thematic lessons not only enrich the learning experience but also make education more meaningful by relating it to real-world knowledge and broader contexts. The school’s curriculum becomes more dynamic, and students begin to grasp the wider applicability of what they learn in class.
After the second or third consecutive year of implementing the NextGen program, schools are prepared to take a significant step forward—moving towards a fully transdisciplinary model of teaching. This is the third stage of the NextGen cross-disciplinary approach, where the focus shifts to seven key transdisciplinary themes that are designed to connect to any area of knowledge. These themes encourage a more fluid learning experience where students explore topics through multiple lenses, breaking down the barriers between traditional subjects.
At this advanced stage, schools adopt a fully developed Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) model, which promotes curiosity-driven exploration and fosters critical thinking skills. Teachers rigorously guide students to ask deep questions, investigate, and synthesize information from various domains of knowledge. This inquiry-based model empowers students to take ownership of their learning and develop lifelong skills that are essential in an ever-changing world.
To ensure successful implementation, the NextGen team works closely with partner schools, providing comprehensive training for teachers. Team Leader Teachers are assigned to each subject area to guide their peers and ensure consistent, high-quality instruction. The program also supports schools in contextualizing the transdisciplinary themes to meet the unique needs and environments of their students. This collaboration between the NextGen team and the schools enables a seamless transition to advanced, inquiry-based, and theme-integrated education, preparing students for the complexities of the modern world.
